The rule of thirds is a technique that is used in various different areas of the art and design world. It is also a technique that can be applied to Interaction Design. The principle of the rule of thirds, is to divide your canvas into a grid of 6 different frames. It helps you to decide where is the most effective part on that grid to place your subject.

Photography

The rule of thirds is most commonly used in the world of photography. When taking a photo a photographer will look at where the subject is positioned using the rule of thirds. They usually try to place the subject at one of the bottom corners.

Graphics Design has the most interesting use of the rule of thirds. When creating a poster that is trying to convey a message to the audience, the rule of thirds ends up helping to direct the viewers attention to the most important parts of the poster.
